I was reading in Isaiah a while back and came across this verse in chapter 62. The revised 1885 version says it beautifully; ‘I have set watchmen upon thy walls O Jerusalem; they shall never hold their peace day nor night: Ye who are the Lord’s remembrancers take ye no rest and give Him no rest till He establish and till He make Jerusalem a praise in the earth.’
The phrase the ‘Lord’s remembrancers’ really stood out to me. As I chased that thought a bit, I found a really powerful analogy. Oriental kings had officers within their court whose purpose was to remind the king of promises or decrees that he had made. These officers stood next to the king with their scrolls of written recordings and would read back to him promises he had made over certain periods of time, to help him stay accountable to his word.
As the Lord’s remembrancers, we have the privilege of coming to the King of kings with His written word and calling to remembrance all of His promises. While we know good and well that God has never forgotten a word He has uttered, as we call these things to His remembrance, it assures us that we do not forget either. It would stand to reason then that as remembrancers, we must know the promises, so we must be in the Word and be familiar with it, but we also have the help of the Holy Spirit, who will bring to our remembrance all the things that God has said to us (John 14:26).
As we come to Him, He delights in our reminders, in fact He invites us to come boldly to the throne of grace. And even more He invites us to keep coming, He literally says, ‘give Him no rest’. Any of you who have been around a child who is persistent in their asking or reminding of something that you have promised them can relate to the sense of irritation or annoyance that builds with each repetitious plea. I can think of several times with exasperation I have told one or more of my kids to “Give it a rest!!” But our heavenly Father does not operate in the same scope of emotions we humans do. He is the very source of patience and gentle kindness and He encourages us to come to Him with ceaseless prayer and petition. Not only does He welcome our persistence, but also grants the assurance that when we ask anything according to His will it will be done (1 John 5:14) and that His Word does not return void (Isaiah 55:11), and that when we ask we receive, when we seek we find and when we knock it is opened to us (Matt. 7:7). So the beauty of knowing His promises is knowing what to ask for so that we can be confident in our requests and bold in our approach.
Remembrancers not only have the audience of the King, but also have the opportunity to stir up the remembrance of these great and precious promises as well as these sure and certain warnings to the body of Christ (2 Peter chapter 1). As we stir one another up in remembrance and keep in the front of our mind the truth, it affects the way we operate from day to day. We can live with the hope and certainty of a chosen people no matter what the circumstances around us look like. But when those memories begin to fade, so does the moral standard. Lines start to blur and slowly we forget who we are and what we stand for or Who we stand with. That is why God says, “take ye no rest and give Him no rest until He has established His work.”
It was this scripture that influenced the name ‘Call to Remembrance’ for this blog. A.W. Tozer has a statement in his book, God’s Pursuit of Man; “the function of a good book is to stand like a signpost directing the reader toward the Truth and the Life.” While this isn’t a book, it is my heart’s desire here is that the Holy Spirit will keep stirring up our remembrance of those good and perfect promises and keep calling each of us to remembrance of who God says He is, and keep directing our eyes to Him, so that together we can approach the Throne of Grace with boldness and assurance and persistence until His work is established on that final day!
